Maths Apps
Most of these apps are free, I have only included paid apps I consider to be very good (eg encourage creativity, collaboration or otherwise have uses at the higher levels of SAMR) This is a useful guide when considering apps although apps don't need to meet all the criteria to be good.
NumeracyMulti-Use AppsSeesaw or any of the Whiteboard apps can be used for students to record their strategies e.g. Addition example using Show Me.
Splash Maths - there are a number of apps in this series for different grades and they cover a range of maths areas. Free version allows 10 questions per day Pre-School and K1 Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5 Seesaw - students can take photos or videos of their work with the ipad or add images and write their own posts about their work and reflections on their learning. These examples use Blogger but the the idea is the same. Example 1, example 2. You can also set Activities in Seesaw, either using some that are in the app or creating your own. Example 1 Story- writing apps like Book Creator ($4.99 but best of its kind and has loads of other uses) can be used to photograph and write about maths. They have a record function so students can talk about their work. Using Book Creator you can also publish maths books to i-books. If the record function isn't used then books can be saved to the camera roll. Creating Maths Riddle Books. Equation Books Doodle Buddy can be used to draw, photograph and write about maths problems and reflections. Finished work can be saved to the photo roll and added to a webpage or blog. Stop Motion Animation in Maths. An app that could be used is Stop Motion Studio. Stages 1 - 4 Addition & SubtractionSlide Addition/Subtraction - Free for first and last level. $1.29 for full game. Number Rack - Rows of ten beads like an abacus. Line Em Up - Place number tiles in order. Can choose the starting number up to 599 and 10 -20 tiles. Pic Collage - take photos of materials and label, show number facts etc. Example 1 Number Line - A number line that can be customised. Can write on it. Could screenshot and put into Show Me or Educreations etc. Mind-mapping apps can be used to show number facts as well as visual representations of addition and subtraction - see example 1, example 2, example 3. Suggested app is Popplet Lite - very easy to use (free for one map or $6.49 for the full version) If using the lite version just screenshot and then delete the Popplet. |
Stages 1 - 4 Counting and OrderSlide Tens & Ones - Free for first and last level. $1.29 for full game. Up to 4 children can play at once in this game with PV to 100. Starts with very basic counting and pattern recognition using symbols for hands, tens boards etc. 10 levels.
Number Rack - Rows of ten beads like an abacus. Line Em Up - Place number tiles in order. Can choose the starting number up to 599 and 10 -20 tiles. Can use negative numbers. 100s board ($3.79) A really useful 100s board which can show patterns, skip counting, hide numbers etc. Number Flash - Number recognition to 20 game using tens frames Number Pieces - Place value blocks which can be moved around to show numbers to 999. Can also write the number. Teaching Number Lines - Addition, subtraction, sequencing and skip counting on a number line to 15. Teaching Number Lines - Count backwards and forwards, put in missing number and skip count on a number line. Some in-app ads.
