Settings
Turn off Adding and/or Deleting Apps – this way students cannot accidentally (or on purpose) buy or delete an app.
Settings > Screen Time >iTune & App Store Purchases. Set your password (Remember this!)
Scroll down and turn Installing Apps, Deleting Apps and/or In-app Purchases off. You can allow these settings by going back in and enabling them but you'll need to enter the password you set up.
Moving, Deleting and Closing apps
To move apps or delete them press and hold until they jiggle. If you have Delete apps enabled an x will appear and you can delete them by pressing the x. Hold the app and slide to move it. Press the Home button once to stop them jiggling.
To close apps double tap the Home button. Open apps will be visible. Slide the app up and it will close. Click the home button once to exit this.
Restrictions - Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy restrictions Enter a password (a 4 digit number very, very important that you remember it!) Re-enter it to confirm. You can now alter the settings. You can disable things like Mail, FaceTime etc. and restrict some types of content. Books, Music & Podcasts can be set to 'Clean'. For the Apps setting it is best to Allow all apps as restrictions will mean many such as Chrome browser won't work at all. You can block specific websites and Limit adult content.
Screen time, App limits, Content - Restrictions > Settings > Screen Time. Set time limits for some apps and set those you want available all the time.
Folders
To make a folder, find two apps you want to put in the folder. Drag one app on top of the other. Rename it. Close it by tapping on the screen outside the folder. Press and hold an app you want to move to the folder to make it jiggle. Drag the app you want to the folder.
Readability: The ipad has two great features for this. Both can be found in Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content
The first is Speech Selection. Turn this on, select the voice you want and the speaking rate (quite slow is best). You can choose to highlight content as it is read. Once enabled any text you select then has a Speak option. Tap it and it will read the text you selected. Works on web pages and in most apps. This is great for reading content from web pages but also for reading back student's own writing so they can edit it
The second is Speak Screen. With this enabled you can have any page read to you by swiping down with two fingers from the top of the screen.
Guided Access
You can set up your ipad so students can only access one app. You can also disable any part of the screen such as the Home button, ads, music settings etc. To do this, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access. Turn it on. Set the access code - this can be the same as the one you use for Restrictions but not the main lock screen code. Remember it (Very important). Go to the app you want students to use. Set the volume at the level you want. Triple click the home button. The first time you use it for an app you can set up which parts you want to disable using the settings buttons and by circling any parts of the screen you want to disable.. To exit Guided Access triple click the Home button again and enter the code. You can also set a timer for an app. Video for setting timer - shows on iphone, the first half of this video applies to an ipad.
